I have been slowly building a small “get away/retirement” home on the Oregon Coast for the past 10 years. I am finally ready to hang the sheetrock. We have 4 -24″ round windows, and I would like some advice on how to case and trim them out. I have thought about building a round template, and building up thin strips of wood till I have a 3/4″ thick round frame to fasten in the rough opening. Any and all advice would be appreciated.

While you can cut your own circular millwork with a molding cutter (or have a millwork shop cut some for you), or buy round casings from Outwater; the classic approach is to cut casing into small wedges (roughly 1" each), glue them up in a circle, then a little touch-up carving/sanding will produce a very acceptable round window casing.

If this will be paint grade, the easiest and least expensive way is to cut the circle casings out of MDF. You can use a router on a stick to get true radii. Then use the router to put a profile on it and slap it up. Use MEDEX for exterior grade if needed. I can often buy curved casings with the window from the manufacturer, too.
Max,
There are always several ways to approach any situation. The factors that determine the approach can be time, money, equipment or general know-how. There was a good article in this rag about using two pieces of identical moulding to create a circle top casing. If you are so inclined then go for it. If not then buy it.

if you do any wood turning, and are equiped, it would be like making a round picture frame.
no turn left unstoned
Max, a few years ago I was met with finishing out an oval window. I took the easy route and finished it with a drywall return using plastic flexi corner bead.
If this is paint grade, don't forget Flex-Trim.

You might check with the folks you bought the window from. The manufacturer might offer a trim kit for your windows.
