I recently priced fir 4 ply cdx sheathing and the counter guy said , I can give you pine 4 ply cdx for less. Is there a drawback to using the pine? I’ve always figured the fir will hold up better but how about voids? nail holding?moisture issues?
thanks,
Jason

Give me Fir anyday. SYP curls, is voidy ( but any CDX can be) and is mostly 3 ply. Hate it. I just realized the faces are worse looking too..but Fir gets more splinters but smaller ones.

I haven't had a problem with voids, but the pine tends to warp more and be more resistant to any attempts to straighten it out. The grain pattern is more pronounced, so it's also more difficult to finish in most situations. Sanded pine finishes about as well as fir.
pine ply prefers to curl up like a dried leave and not lay flat
