I recently had my fireplace & flue cleaned and I was informed that I did not have a ‘smoke shelf’ behind the fireplace damper. I checked and sure enough there is a gap at the top of the firebox bricks behind the damper approximately 1.5″ wide. My questions : Can I continue to safely use the fire place until repairs are made and what is the preferred method for repair ….Thanks
