We had our house built with a traditional Rumford fireplace. The opening is 40″ hgt x 40″ width with a 20″ hearthstone. We’d like to have a screen cover the entire opening to protect our beech flooring from sparks. Due to the shallow depth of the Rumford, we’d like to have the screen extend out about 10″ – 14″ from the fireplace “plane”.
It seems the stock fireplace screens max out at a 36″ height and custom screens are about $600 from a Google search. Does anyone know of a cheaper source or have had fabricated one themselves?

LLBean has some nice ones. Did you check them out? You may not get one that meets your 40" height spec, but maybe your sparks aren't flying out of the upper quarter of your opening.
Oops! I wuz wrong. They don't carry them anymore. I just looked.
Here's a link, but you probably have seen them. Expensive, just like you said.
