Any fish in it?
If not... drain clean and start over.
20-30 goldfish. And they are frisky.
frogs, water snake, catfish and lots of bream.
<grin> Thanx! ;-)
Aerate it. Get a pump and fountain setup..
How large a pond?
Real fish pond? I have what we call a duck pond, but I don't think it has ever seen a duck.
There are chemical shock additives, but you have to be careful and it will be a challenge for the finny friends if you overdo it

Its a small man made pond 5x8- 3foot deep with a waterfall. I have used some chemicals but so far I have been careful and the fish are doing fine. I heard of a enzyme system that is harmless to fish and water plants I am going to try. Its supposed to rid the pond of excess algea. I guess its supposed to have some algea in it.
You're supposed to have a filter hooked up to the pumping system. Filters come in all sorts of sizes and types. The best are bacterial filters. And then there are sand filters. Frequently there also is a UV light hooked up in the system.
Better study what you got.
Mine has a filter on the pump that I clean every couple of days. I have looked into other filters but don't know which would be the best all around kind. My problem is that there are too many choices out there and I am very new at this.

would a bubbler work? or does he just need to get the water moving over the waterfall?.

I was thinking airstones when I wrote bubbler.

any of the above to get air disolved in the water

good then the only drawback to the airstone is .....dry air.

depending on your set up, go to a Skippy filter (http://www.skippysstuff.com/biofiltr.htm)Have a ~2500 gal set up (2 ponds and a stream) change the 100 gal filter once a year.somebody already suggested barleyDon't know your set up but I have some alge but I don't worry about it.get a couple Hyances (they multiply ) creates shade in the pond which slows algue growth.

Mine is about 500 gallons and I have a LOT of sun on it. Not much shade in the PM. I have introduced plants though.
I have been told that a little algea is good.
Take a look at the Skippy filter, easy to make, no maintenance. When we started to think about a pond I went herehttp://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/ponds/lots of pond folks

Sun is algae's best friend.
So is stagnant water.
Drain, powerwash, and start over. It's the fastest and cheepest way.
I had a decent pond in California and no matter what I did, twice a year, the fish & plants had to come out, the bacterial filter cleaned out, and the plastic junk filters had to be power washed. It comes with the territory.
Watch out for herons and 'coons.
bobl, do you mean Hyacinths? very nice pond BTW, I really like the big river rock.

"do you mean Hyacinths"yesthey are invasive but in Illinois they won't be a problem because they're tropical. They can replicate fast. we started with 3 a month or so ago and and now have about 18.

Ok, I thought tthey looked familiar from the picture..our neighbor is constantly throwing them in their big pond
..there is a creek between us and she said there is some statute that prohibits tossing them in the stream.because they reproduce so quickly.

Larry,
Google on barley straw. Cheap and long lasting but slow.
