Fixed / Plunge Combinations Routers

Caleb | Posted in Tools for Home Building on March 3, 2003 08:39am

I need to pick up a router for some work this spring (DIY) and have had my eye on the Porter Cable Fixed / Plunge Combination Router (Model 693LRPK). I was in that big orange box store taking a look at it and noticed that they had a Dewalt (DW616PK) with identical features.

I’m leaning towards the PC even though it’s a bit more expensive since I’ve heard good things about it. Anyone have any comments either or both of these routers?

I have the PC, it works good but I hardly use the plunge base personally.

I have never used the dewalt but I don't like them, had to many bad experiences with other dewalt tools.

What are you going to be doing with the router?  what type of projects?

hi caleb, ive had a 693 for years with both the fixed base and the plunge base

always had problems with both bases, the fixed screwa onto the motor housing using steel(i guess) pins that ride in groves on the base,  found that wear in those grooves quickly made adjustments tricky. the plunge base is anice piece except for the clamping system. i find it very difficult to remove the motor after using the plunge base.

on the positive side the 693 is a very powerful machine for its size and the two wrench collet is much better than the shaft stop system on some routers

Steve, you ever call PC about the problems you had with the base?  I've had mine going on 7 years no problems personally...

Only reason I ask is I had a problem with the steel shoe bending on my little 6" PC circular saw last year, they sent me a new one free of charge.  This was after the warranty had expired, it was through my local PC dealerView ImageGo Jayhawks

Check how the handles feel in your hands. PC handles are big and rugged, but I can't use any of them for long because of that.

For that reasaon alone I seem to always buy Makita.

I got the DeWalt 618 for Christmas. I love that router. Its well balanced, powerful, easy to use(one wrench and a lock). The thing fits my hands great. I haven't used the plunge base too much yet, but it operated well when I di use it.

must add another comment, have used 693 for years but also have hitachi 3 horse, nice machine but the plunge mech is very hard to use, dont know why'

tried cleaning and lube just binds after a couple of uses

the 693 is a great machine(wore out 3 sets of brushes) except for removing the plunge base

I have the 690/693. Mine is the older one before they added the cam lock and variable speed.

It is a workhourse, but not very refined.

With the fixed base you sometimes have problems with it jamming due to sawbust.

And the lock mechanisan to put the motor in the 693 is real mickey mouse and a pain to use.

I am not disapointed in my purchase, but in the last couple of years there have been 3 or 4 new designs that include both bases. I know that Boosch, DeWalt had then and I think a couple of other ones.

If I had to replace it I would check out the others FIRST.

the bosch 1617 combo kit is pretty good, i have that and the 690 for plunge kits and like the feel of the bosch over the PC

Why not just get a plunge router?  They are safer and more funtional than fixed.  Bosch, Makita, Dewalt, PC all make very good routers, you won't go wrong with any of those.

DeWalt is moving factory to Mexico. Bad move.

You can't go wrong with the P. C. . Milwalkee makes the smoothest running roughter Ive ever used. LIFETIME WARRANTY ON ALL MILWALKEES.

Main Bearing size is a big deal here.
