After four years the cedar shakes siding the addition to my house outside NYC are bleeding tannins through the white paint. Bleed is uniform, not around nails (which are stainless). Bleed seems to be more advanced in more exposed (sun and moisture) areas. Shakes were primed with Benjamin Moore Alkyd primer (all sides)and finished with two coats BM acrylic latex.
What is the best way to fix the problem? I was hoping to get away with a thorough washing, prime and paint. Is there something else I need to do.
I will be living in the house awhile so I’d like the job to last this time.

Hiya Mike and welcome to Breaktime.
I found your post hear while searching for data on refinishing cedar shake siding.
Somehow your post slipped thru the cracks so Ill boot it up again to the front hoping someone can give you some advice.
You need a stain blocking primer/sealer, oil based is best.
Kilz, Binz etc.
