See the picture for what happens when they (the flashers) forget to show up before the door’s installed….when I took the thing out, I first thought the only thing wrong was that the finger-jointed brick mould had rooted out (like it always seems to)….took off the interior casing (nailed only at the jamb, with panel nails!)….not a lick of foam or fiberglass, no nails throug the jamb….but by God the brickmould was glued to the sheathing!
BTW, the job was done by “professionals”….I’m having fun reading the back and forth on DIYs vs. Pros after I got edited a few weeks back for suggesting that some posters needed to hit the books before posting!

Jr,
What is your plan to fix this mess ?
Are we there yet ?
Almost done....it's my cousins house & they are selling and relocating to Hot'Lanta, so I did the best job for the least money possible....sistered in new sill plate, pegged to treated blocks in the CMU foundation, sistered in new doubled band joist, Dutchman in the bottom 8 inches of the jack, got as much Grace peel & stick around the opening as I could, set the door on sill pan, foamed everywhere I could & called it done
The funny part is, somewhere down the line some Chippy will be working on it again & saying, look what crappy work this is...
Just as an aside, it having been awhile since I put in an exterior door, I got to thinking...the peel & stick is great (I come from the old tar paper days), my foam gun gets controlled beads of foam in places those old disposable cans never went, sill pans are a nice bit of added insurance.....all this relatively cheap, easily availible technology, and still some Bozo installed the door five years ago & didn't use any of it....sad & stupid....no wonder some HOs decide to DIY, when "pros" do sh*t like that.
getting paid to do something and being a Pro are not synonomous..
no Pro did that... a hack is a hack wether they are DIY's or call themselves ProsMike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
Oh so true....I don't think there are more bums in the building trades than in any other line of work, but we certainly are one of the least regulated businesses around....
How old is that house?
I am seeing 1x sheating over framing and some type of wood lap siding over the sheathing, followed by the drop in foam and vinyl siding.
The door may have benn installed only five years ago, and added to a problem that existed before the vinyl hid it all.
The hack that installed the door may not be the only one that worked on that place.
You just got to fix stuff left by a couple of decades of them.

"I am seeing 1x sheating over framing and some type of wood lap siding over the sheathing, followed by the drop in foam and vinyl siding."Yup, that's exactly what you're seeing.....now, the corner you saw in the picture was the side of a new addition, same age as the siding & door install....so the wall the door is in was originally the back wall of the house...there was a window where the door is now
So, it's possible there was some rot coming down from the old window, but I doubt it....the snow gets pretty deep up here, & I'm betting it piled up in that corner & then melted right down past the non-existant flashing.
Been There Found that...No chimney Flashing....8 feet of wall, top plate to sill, GONE
That vinyl siding sure does keep things hidden well. That much damage takes time....

LOL! Ya gotta love it when ya find stuff like that! Cha Ching!
I run into stuff like that all the time!

and the sad thing is it's just typical for too many places. I was actually standing in a house once, talking to the painter, (who was also kind of besides himself - like what the heck am I doing here) and it was raining out. Water coming in through the windows. Down the wall, soaking the trim. I'm like, you better call and tell him about this. Builder says "oh, it'll dry. Siders will put the vinyl on next week" like . . . oh man. I think you got more issues.
