Another topic on my mind is. I am adding on to my house a 32 x 32 addition that will add three bedrooms and two baths. In the master bedroom I will be laying down slate. Taking up a little over a 1/4 of the add-on. Will using the Floor Joist Chart for – 40 PSF LIVE LOAD be good to use? I would think that is enough. Then the rest of the rooms I could use – 30 PSF live load chart right?

depends on the baths.. why not use 40 for the whole 2d floor ?
*It's a ranch house not going up but going back..
*The master bath is figured in on the 40 PSF. But the other bath is a basic tub and shower. It would be no biggy to just add extra joists under the other full bath Then the other bed rooms can be spaced for a 30 PSF right?
*if this is not 2d floor then the whole thing should be designed at 40 psf.....1st floor is always 40.....
*Great! Thanks for your insight.
*theharv.. lemme back up... that is just the table that you use.. you have to account for all point loads and all conditionsyour local code will determine..here 1 & 2 family dwellings..1st floor 40.. but decks are 60....
*Not sure where you are, but 40 PSF live load for residentail floors in required pretty much all over the USA. BOCA allows 30 PSF for 2nd floor bedrooms only. But - 30 PSF is definitely a bad idea in my opinion. That allows for spans on joists to be too long, which could result in a "bouncy" floor. Also - Who knows what will happen to those 2nd floor bedrooms 5 or 10 years down the road. They could become a den, or an office, or just about anything.
*Ditto, Mike and Ron.steve
