Anyone ever had to do this:
Existing conditions – half of room tile, other half carpet. carpeted half sits about
2.5″ below the level of the tile. I needed to shim the area where the carpeting was so that the top of the new oak flooring would be flush with the top of the existing ceramic tile.
My question (at last! lol ) is how would you cut long tapered shims from a 2×4? I needed them to be 9′ long and go from 7/16″ to 5/8″. I cut them with a power saw. Results were good but just wanted another point of view.
thanks…

Was it freehand or using a straight edge?

If you do a lot of this sort of thing it may be worth your while to research the edge guide systems as EZ Guide or the Festool set-up.

I have pieces of thick-stock (I think it's just plastic laminate that's 1/2" thick) eight foot long that serves as a straight edge.
Ya, that'll do it.

If you could run the wood parallel to the joint line, you could rip constant-thickness shims of different thicknesses and place them 12" apart like floor joists.
