I have an exterior trim job which will require a lot of 1×6 and 1×8 to be wrapped with aluminum coil stock. I would like to consider using foam backing material instead of white pine. I know the cost will be a lot less, but what else do I have to consider? The trim work includes rakeboards, windows, corners etc. Thanks for your help!

Randy,
3/4" CDX would be an option. It wouldn't take much to rip a bunch of what you need. It would be nice and straight and you'd be able to put a few nails in the sides. You wouldn't have that option with a foam. You could use 1 3/4" trim nails through the face of the foam into the substrate but that would promote buckling of the aluminum. I've had excellent results wrapping wood trim boards using silicone under the face with just enough nails in the sides to hold it until the silicone sets up. Very little buckling of the face when the sun hits it. If you end up using foam with some kind of adhesive, make sure they are compatible. I've learned that silicone doesn't adhere to Dow board very well. The homeowner would appreciate the wood underneath when he went to mount a flag pole holder, house numbers, light fixtures, planters, etc. down the road.
1 x 8 is kind of big to trim with coil stock, but you gotta do what you gotta do.
