Let me call this idea I’m proposing here as one of Tom Peter’s BHAGS – Big Hairy Audacious Goals.
It’s come to my mind that we are not fully utilizing this thing called the Internet, and particularly these forums, to their fullest potential.
We all remember those ideas and things we learned at seminars of our various trade shows, and even back then, what we learned in some of our high school or college courses. They offered a concentrated discussed concept within a short period of time.
Many of our comments here are based on our past experiences, personal habits, individual idiosyncrasies and prejudices and the nuances of our particular businesses. It would be nice to create a discussion based on a book’s author who is respected for his “insights” in one or more particular areas of the business world. After all, I don’t think any of us ever gets to old to learn.
So, I thought about creating here a somewhat online perpetual education atmosphere, not unlike college courses offered online. What if each of us, or those who are interested, were to periodically buy the same book that has a lot of relevance to each of our businesses, read the book and then create a thread for the entire book or a separate one for each of it’s chapters. Then as each of us please, we can discuss the contents, statements or concepts of its author by chapter, even jumping from chapter/discussion at our leisure. We would all be talking about the same basis and perhaps in this organized manner, learn the pros and cons of what’s applicable to each of us individually regarding the subject(s) of the chosen book and/or author, and also as members of our industry.
I’m not talking about heavy reading, just books about the various subjects already covered here. By doing so, one could refer to one or more of it’s statements, ideas or platform, and the rest of us would immediately be able to relate to it’s context and meaning.
To go even one step further, once thoroughly discussed, we could even contact the author and ask his opinion about one or more of the concepts contained in his book, and how it would apply to our industry.
Anyway, I just thought I’d throw this out – good or bad idea?
