I am designing a modification to my house. I want to remove a bearing wall which is the front wall of a closet, so I can create a hallway where the closet was. I need to know the details of framing the header into the walls which will now be the sides of the hallway. The house is 2×4 platform construction and the hallway will be 3 feet wide.
My questions:
Do I use double studs (One being the Trimmer) perpendicular the the other studs in the side wall?
Do I align the studs with the outside of the side wall studs?
Do I need to cut the lower top plate and extend the new plate into the side wall or could I cut the upper top plate instead?

Carl...
Too bad we cant get drawings into this BB..
I read your message several times and I think you are wanting to put a doorway into an existing exterior wall to gain access to your addition..
The new double 2x12 header will be under the existing top plates of this wall,(where you are removing the existing studs) with the trimmer studs flush with the walls in the newly created hallway.
If this gobblygook didnt answer your question..email me
*I to remain confused. I have re-hung 32 feet of bearing wall from a beam that an engineer designed so I feel I'm able to help some what with your problem. Framing a header perpendicular to an existing stud wall leaves out the most critical question which is is that wall a bearing wall, and if so or not is the wall you need a header in a bearing or soon to be a bearing wall. How are the joists running? For a 3 to 5' opening I can't run the numbers but a 2 X 10 double header wold probably be more than enough.
