When running cable to a subpanel for a home addition, pay attention to the size of the wire and the amperage of the breaker.

Went by his driveway yesterday on the way to the 4:30 boat
Went by his driveway yesterday on the way to the 4:30 boat
That brings up a logistics problem. IIRC, the 4:30 ferry is the last one of the day and it can be 20-30 mins from the far side of the island to the ferry. The 1st ferry of the day leaves Camden at 8AM and it's a 20+ min ride. Add rollout and rollup time and lunch and that leaves about a 4-5 hour work day. Do you stay out there or commute?http://www.quittintime.com/ View Image
Grant,
I got on the first Sunday boat at 9 in Lincolnville Beach -- 20 minute boat ride -- 15 minutes by truck arrived and got my bearings , then started helping.
Left the site at 3:55 to make sure I wasn't going to have to do an overnite.
Just went out for the day to help lay the salvaged slates , but they weren't quite ready yet. Took over some copper for dormer bottom flashings and a bunch of steps , but didn't get to use them yet.
When I work on the next Island down I spend a week or 10 days so a lot of work can be done.
Walter
Just found this - I gotta do some sluething to find the job now...LOLMy crews would land on the job about 8:30 and leave at 4PM from the jobsite, maybe a few minutes earlier from way up-island. using reservations, and a fast drive, they just got to the ferry line in time. That gave about a seven hour work day. I would unlock, roll out tools, set up and all that before they arrived, and reverse close shop after they left to make for an efficient day. So within five minutes after landing and a visit to portajonny (Walter says, "get my bearings", LOL), the conversation was, Here is what I'd like to see happen today, and sawdust was flying.

Yup , you're just across the road can't see the house from the road.
Didn't have a minute that day , but something tells me I'll be out again.
Yeah, it's a quarter mile back in. ignore the no trespassing sign. That is for trespassers;)

Yeah, you'd described the routine to me when I was up there. I knew you had reserved spots on the ferry for your guys. Didn't figure Walter had the same setup for a one off job. Was curious how he was dealing with the commute.http://www.quittintime.com/ View Image
Grant,
Island traffic dies down significantly after Labor Day here.
I was one of 6 vehicles on the last boat on Sunday.
Walter
Yah, Sundays especially slow.

Going to go back out in the morning to help again since they are now ready for the stone.
It is now morning.
I'll be working way down island, but may try to catch up with you by phone depending...Gotta use this glorious weather while we have it, and work off that turkey fat

Went back out today to help lay some slate and flash a recessed dormer window.
All my brakes are out so we hand bent these pieces for a less than usual window opening.

Good thing I can safely enter again -- I'm almost out of stamps.
Last ones I purchased were going for 28 cents. Have they gone up any ??!!
You sir are a prime candidate for those 'forever' stamps. By now at .42 and buy alot. They'll always be good.A Great Place for Information, Comraderie, and a Sucker Punch.

It's no fun being on the mend instead of normal activities.
I spent all last Fall with no hip joint and then a second op. to put another in.
Hang in there -- Smitty can't be improving too much while you're idle.
Walter
I don't know, the s.o.b. was out last sunday with frost, sleet and turkey soup boiling in the bed of the pickup.

Paul,
Same here - worked till 4 then headed to the boat to get a ticket and back to Newburgh.
I can't figure why they recessed that window , but hey what do I know .
Luckily I can solder up copper sheet , but didn't finish that yet. The rake trim on the left side was not applied yet so we couldn't run slate all the way out.
The dormer still needs trim boards too.
A bigger one on the other side.

I spent sunday salvaging clapboard siding that had blown all over kingdom come top finish a wall. I had gotten sidetracked friday to replace a square of shingles on a roof where they'd been blown off in that storm.Today, I was peacefully enjoying the rain by staying at the computer to do a design concept presentation. I was wrapping that up just before lunch when I got a call from an insurance agent - can I get a tree off a roof and fix the hole right away?Turned out to be three trees, five holes, and man am I sore. Worked 'till after dark.
Trees are off and holes have temp fixes.

Yes
things are a lot slower now. Couple big jobs on delay until the market and economy get rolling again. Not so hard to get on the boat without a reservation.

Looks like a fun little project, Walter--
I'm curious about the roof insulation detail. What's up with the 2x2's in the foreground?
I used to have that exact same Volvo. Is the front end smashed up from hitting a deer?

Mike,
Theres a timber framed roof on stick built walls , with the v- match running vertically.
2x8 rafters 4 ' apart with 3 layers of blue board over the t&g. We stripped 2x stock to give more nailers for the boarding boards.
They had hoped to be ready for slating yesterday , but instead I played carpenter.

Calvin,
Hope you're healing up nicely from your procedure.
No that isn't me - my friend who's helping build this structure.
I do however look youthful for a 58 year old curmudgeon !!

Have a great Turkey day

Alright, just need some guidance case I see you walking down the street. Would hate to just walk by.
You're on Pauls island? Cool. Check and see if his house is "finished" will you? Nice to have that to fall back on case the wives start getting in on us...........

I know you're not the GC, but wouldn't an SIP make a better detail? I would think the extra framing and insulation are a lot more work then an 8" SIP and some long screws. Also, is there a hotel on the island if you miss the boat?

Jon,
We laid slate over SIP's this past Spring in the Photo thread " Waiting for a crane"
The gc strapped the osb surface then nailed on the same sheathing boards to make a suitable nailing base for slate.
Your method has merit , but it was not my call. I was there for only a day to help with the starting of the recycled slates - but they weren't far enough along for my help there.
I needed to get back to finish up a lock seam porch roof on Monday or else I would have stayed with friends and helped again. Lots of rain here today and heading to Philly in the morning.
Walter
That's funny!
I was just looking at that volvo and remembering working out of a '72 wagon I'd bought a few years ago...
