As you can see in the photo, the pitch of the overhang isn’t very much. A couple of years ago, my grandfather put up vinyl siding on both gable ends. Problem now is that after 50 years, its finally starting to leak. My problem is that with the vinyl siding newly installed, I am not sure how to install new roofing and flashing underneath the J channel strip along the bottom. Is there any way to somehow temporarily remove the bottom piece of vinyl sidding or get the bottom edge detached?

There is a tool for unsnapping or detaching vinyl siding. A siding supply house or dealer should have them.
Remove the bottom course of siding and then the j-channel. Install the new roof and then reinstall the the j-channel and siding.
One note of caution. The bottom of siding should be snapped on a starter strip. Unsnap the lock joint between the first and second course. Remove the nails from the top of the first course and push down on it to release it from the starter strip.

Thank you very much. I appreciate the quick and very helpful response. (That takes quite a bit of pressure off my mind now I can focus on school more). I cann't wait to finish up the project. I've included a picture of what I did this past summer...increased the ceiling hieght from 6'-6" to 8'-6" .
You can get a tool designed to "unzip" vinyl siding. Then you take off the bottom row (or two) of the siding, put in your flashing, put the siding back and, using the same tool, zip it back together.
Any lumberyard should have the tool.
Another day, another tool.
