Hello –
I’m getting ready to build a basement window well with
pressure treated posts – stacked up and held together with rebar spikes like
a retaining wall except it would be a three sided box that
is against the wall.
I’m doing this because this needs to be a temporary setup and want to be able to take it apart in the future and the sides need to be straight.
(Can’t use the curved galvanized steel wells.)
What sort of sealant or glue should I use between the stacks to seal
against moisture migration into the well ?
Would 100% silicone caulking work ?
Asking because I’m not sure if the CCA in the PT wood will
work against some sealants or glue.
Thanks for your help !
Alan

Alan - If it's open on top like most wells why worry about it? You can drain the well if you want, but you'll get some rainfall within the open top, right?

*Alan, Polyurethane glues such as Gorilla Glue work well on pressure treated lumber.
*allen.. i'm with jeff on this one..put some drainage in the bottom..make it with 2x2 PT posts and 5/4 x 6 PT sides.. you ain't building a boat .. it's a window well...
*Thanks for the alternate suggestions.I like the 2x2 post with board sides idea. However, have to figure out if the sides will hold off a dry laid brickpatio, especially when I start running the plate compactor for the base. When you say drainage, would laying couple inches of #57 graveldo the job ? I would spread this larger then the window well areaand build the well on top of it. (Rather then dropping gravel into the well after it's built.)
*Alan - The plate compactor / patio combination suggests beefier construction - 4x4 + 2x4's, right? What about using your paving brick around the top as edge trim?
