I am framing my house basement and need to increase the span of a beam. I presently have a 8 3/4″ by 3″ glulam spanning 9’8″ and need to extend the span to 13’10”. Due to headroom constraints, I can’t go to a thicker glulam (ie greater than 8 3/4″). What options do I have? Is a flitch beam a viable option or do I need to go to a steel I beam which would be a bit heavy.
