need to figure how to get him in and out without a raised sill

Without a raised sill? Just roll in with a commode chair. With a sill is a different matter.
what is a commode chair?

Just a wheelchair that's designed to go into a shower. It's also got an toilet-like seat, and a place where a bedpan can be inserted below, hence the name.
thanks for ideas I was unaware of shower chair
i did one reecently, the bathroom was about 10' by 15'. We just had the whole floor tiled and the floor within about a 24" radius sloped in towards the drain (there is a name for that but i cant remember what it is).
It actually makes for a cool looking bathroom. I went to italy reecently and they were all like that, no shower curtans anywhere

Foxfire, this was a part of an addition, so carrying it over to a remodel will be perhaps difficult. We framed the floor in the shower area and were able to drop the floor level down allowing us to tip the mud base down to the drain. The entire floor was membraned, shower enclosure a custom bent track, plastic glides and stainless chain dropped the shower curtain (similar to a hospital curtain). The weight of the outter decorative curtain made sliding easy. The sink is from Kohler, set in an approved ht. etc laminate (over ply) countertop.
This was built with an attendant in mind to aid the occupant. There are controls to consider for the temps of the water so there's no scalding. It's more than just pressure balanced shower valves. Same goes with covers over the piping below the counter. Ht. of electrical and inroom temperature another thing to consider. Use the suggest space requrements for a chair and think beyond that to the comfort of the individual.
Best of luck.
