Listeners write in about haunted pipes and building-science tomes, and they ask questions about roof venting and roof leaks.

Hardi plank usually comes with recomendations on or with the package.
a lotta guys use saws to cut this, but after doing this a couple of times i bought the shears and i will never use a saw on hardi products again.
I always back caulk all my siding as well caulking on the face.I use a caulk specificaly made for Hardi siding called " Quad" . I always put the cut end agianst the corner board and give it about 1/8 of an inch(only because i use cedar corners and facia) to give the wood room to move.
At the joints i cut a small piece of 30 lb felt ot got behind the joint and always caulk between the two pieces.
Don't let your nails be drivin to deep they should be flush or preferably a little proud as this is the same idea as driving a sheetrock nail to deep. the material looses its integrity.
thats about it. if i forgot something i'm sure someone else will fill you in.
hope i've been of some help.

the "quad" caulking, is it a brand name? is it from hardi? i have yet to find a caulking that i like to use with fiber cement siding... thanks.
kahuna, we use a 12 volt makita 3 1/2" saw for fiber cement. the rpm is slow and the 'dust' just falls instead of floating all around you. good luck. paul.

Lots more, do a search (at bottom of the frame at the left of your screen) on "hardi" or "cement board"
