I’ve been asked to replace some masonite siding on a 16 year old home
It has 12″ wide masonite lap siding on it and they have asked that Hardi Siding be used to replaced the damaged siding (moisture damaged)
I will be mixing hardi siding which is 5/16 thick with masonite which is 7/16 thick
I will be butting the end of the new hardi siding against the end of the masonite which is thicker
I will be using the metal splices for the butt joints.
Will the butt joint at the end of the siding stand out like a sore thumb as the two pieces are a different thickness?
Thanks for any input

I would think so.
How are you going to get the metal splices to fit the Hardi?

You're rightIt won't look good because there will be a 1/8 " gapI think I am going to have to replace the entire row of siding that way I can avoid any butt joints (hardi against masonite)
There you go>G<
You could in theory somehow attach a 1/8" piece of something to the back of the Hardi on each end, to make the splices look nice. But then you'd have the Hardi warping over to the next stud, and a gap behind the lap near butt joints.
Thanks Dan that's good advice I'm going to experiment with the H channel and try to make something look goodwhen you install the bottom row "first row" of siding the mfg says to use a 1 and 1/4 inch "starter strip"What would you use for starter strip material? Just cut up a piece of hardi siding into strips 1 and 1/4 wide? Thanks
Yeah, you generally rip pieces of siding, if you can stand the dust.

Thanks DanOne last questionHow does hardi board lap siding look if you follow the instructions and DO NOT apply caulking in the gap at the butt jointI was talking to the sales associate at Home depot and he told me most installers DO go ahead and caulk the butt joint Seems like it would look better with the caulkingespecially if you have cut the piece of siding to length and have some kind of jagged edgeThanks again
Make sure there are some gaps in the starter strip to allow for drainage.
Wow, good adviceI printed out the instructions from the manufacturers website and they did not say one word about thatIt sure makes sense thoughI'll be sure and do it that wayThanks again
