I’m going to reside my home this fall and trying to decide which fibercement board siding to go with. I’m installing it vertically as Board & Batten in a combination of 4’X8′ sheets with 12″ exposure battens-over top and 12″X12′ boards as real board & batten in some area under and over windows.
My question is this: go with Hardieboard or Certainteed Weatherboard? Certainteed is about 15% cheaper from what I’ve checked. Surface grain differences are a little different but Its a wash on that one (that doesn’t matter to me). I’m going with just preprimed.
Just wonder if either one stands ahead of the other for any reason. I know Hardi was first, and there price has come down to compete with the knockoffs….so it it just a Ford vs. Chevy thing??

I've checked them out myself and will be going with Certainteed on my house. I couldn't find any real difference between them unless you wanted a variety of color options that Hardie offers. I will be going with primed myself but was told to be sure to paint both sides for added protection. Still looking into the different application techniques and hopefully ready to install in 2 months.
CJ's,
I'm leaning the same way you are-going with Certainteed, Hardie was first and has the name recognition but if you look at the technical specs the CT looks to be a better product. The primer is actually added to the process and embedded throughout, so back priming isnt necessary.
I talked to my supplier yesterday and he said DON'T Back prime it will void warranties, is that true? I also like the grain structure on the CT better, plus its 15% cheaper around here- Erie, PA
For certainteed's FiberTect products, the finish paint or stain should be 100% acrylic-latex, not oil-based.
The "boards" need to be able to "breath", so as you heard, certainteed does not allow prime/paint/stain on the bakc side of the boards.
Certainteed has a corporate philosophy of market entry and capture by just buying the best companies available..
when they decided to get into FiberCement they bought Ashland Davis (DuraPress)
i've looked at Hardie.. but prefer Certainteed ..we've been using Certainteed since before they became Certainteed.. ie: we started with Ashland Davis in 1998 ..
and we intend to stay with Certainteed until something better comes along... which hasn't happened yet

Hello MikeI was reading some old posts and I saw your name. I've got an oral commitment with my supplier for 20 squares of hardieboard. While looking at a project in my town I ran into a builder who has, believe or not, 20 squares of certainteed, same reveal (4") that I need. He said he'd sell it cheap. I've got a square of hardie already for my "experiment" side where I'm figuring out how to install it. I think I may save quite a bit if I switch to Certainteed with this guy. Any thoughts on changing the siding horse mid-stream? Are both boards 5/16"? Thanks. Joel
