Is 3/4″ ply directly over concrete a suitable sub-floor for 3/4″ hardwood. Or will I have to build up with 3/4″ sleepers? The slab is over a portion of the family room so I don’t have a moisture problem. I need to transition from the slab to wood sub floor and the concrete is already 3/4″ higher. Thanks -Ed

3/4" ply is a proper substrate. Be sure to glue and nail it into the concrete. We use a powder accuated gun to do the nailing. About 32 nails/ 4x8 sheet. As far as the glue is concerned we used to trowel the concrete with a black mastic but now we use PL Premium. I love the stuff. Buying it in 29 oz cartridges work best. The 10oz cartridges are not as cost effective and need to be changed too frequently.
Be sure the slab is clean and seald first too.
I'll join the chorus.
PL Premium is the besat construction adhesive I have ever used for anything and everything.
It'll even hold your hair in place on those windy days. Something for Frenchy to think about while he's roofing his house..

Construction adhesive also works great for reinforcing the knees in your work pants. About 15 years ago I was laying a subfloor and got const. adhes. all over my knees. Now the rest of the pants have rotted away, but the knees still look great!
Maybe there's a business opportunity there.
Cotton re-inforced urethyne pants?
As proof urethyne is long wearing, the soles of a lot of work boots are made from it..

If the slab is 3/4 higher then the subfloor and you add 3/4" ply to the concrete and 3/4" hardwood you'll end up and inch and a half higher then the subfloor which is a "tripper". What are you going to put ontop of the subfloor? More hardwood? In which case you'll be 3/4" higher. So what will you use? A saddle to transition it? Just wondering.

Andy, I have 3/4" 1x8's as my sub floor over the floor joists so I'll build that up with sleepers to be even with the concrete, then run the 3/4" ply over the entire 1st floor, then hardwood over that. My concern was that the 3/4" ply would not be thick enough over the concrete and the nails for the hardwood floor would bottom out in the concrete. If I don't need the sleepers over the concrete, which it doesn't sound like I do, then I'll pick up 3/4" head room. Thanks everyone for your help. -Ed
