Header in Balloon Frame wall…

Boy, I’m kicking myself on this one b/c I know one of you guys recently posted a very good diagram (SoftPlan) of a header in a ballon frame wall. Just found out I have to widen a door opening. Anyone remember the one I’m talking about or who posted? It was in the last two weeks and I couldn’t turn it up in a search.
I’m cutting out one stud, below the ledger board. I’m thinking I’ll cut away the bottom of the affected stud, and simply install the header on two cripples posted down to the sill against the two adjacent full studs. Am I missin something?
Thanks,
Brian

The reason I drew this one though is to show a guy unfamiliar with what he might find in the wall, what it should end up like, because he wanted his header set flush with the window being high in the wall.
You've got the right idea. I did not draw the cripples in this, just stuck the header in at the joist level.

That's the one... thanks Piffin. That software is impressive. We go to a lot of building conventions for my construction recruiting biz, and I always stop to look at what softplan has cooking. I don't do as much work in the field as I used to, but I still toy with buying the package.
I'm looking at the physics here and I'm not inclined to worry too much about temp support on this install -- I'm cutting below the ledger (which is notched in and should help carry a little) and I'm only cutting one stud. (Not to mention I have a few 20 ton jacks sitting around if anything does sag! :) Anything else I should consider here?
Thanks again for the pic.

Nope. The sheathing and ledger should carry temporarily while you insert the header, then cut jacks tight and set top, drive base in to snug up

Just curious - what is a constructiuon recruiting business?Head-hunter for specialists and PMs?

Exactly.
I work mostly with high-end builders and remodeling contractors around MA to help them hire and retain Leads, Supers, PMs... all the way to "Presidents" (though that only comes up with co's over a certain size).
Before I started my little remodeling co in the late 90's, I was a head hunter for bigger corporate clients. I'm about 5'6" and 150lbs soaking wet. One day as I was humping sheet stock up 3 flights of stairs for a homeowner I realized that I was probably more of a liability to them than an asset!! LOL. Thankfully that was right around the time when my friend Colm was moving his company out of his attic, and I joined him to help get things off the ground. We've gone from me, Colm and his daughter to 13 full-time people in less than 3 years... what a ride!
You can check out http://www.construction-recruiters.com if your curious about the stuff we're working on. I've met so many outstanding builders -- who are even better human beings -- through this process than I ever would have imagined. It's really been an honor to work with people whose work you admire.
Anyway... I'm basically incapable of a short answer... sorry if I'm rambling. Probably far more than you needed to know!!
Thanks again for your help on the header.

Thanks for the ramble. Especially the comment on how it takes quality people to build quality businesses.Long ago, in another life it seems, after the failure of my first marriage - which, BTW, was the only event in my life that I would really consider to have been a failure - I spent some introspective time, and concluded that if I wanted a good wife, I needed to first beome a good man and grow in the area of character and the inner qualities that would attract and hold a good woman before I could expedct a solid family life.Just as a quality house structure requires quality components and design, so too a family, a business or a country.

So true. And nowhere have I found that to be truer than in our industry. In corporate america, character can get lost in the shuffle more easily. But in a business where talent is scarce and a handshake can still seal a deal... it's on display all the time.
Doesn't mean I haven't found "successful" builders that are lacking character... but they're the exception, I've come to discover.
It's funny you guys should mention the big builders, as we generally steer clear of the Pulte, Centex, Toll crowd for that very reason. They tend to grind people up and spit them out, and while they've asked us to work for them, I've generally turned them down.
I'm heading down to the show in Worceseter, MA next month (or is it March... hmmm). I'm actually going down to take the advanced Stairbuilding workshops! (Though, who knows, I might meet a couple solid Lead's while I'm there, too :). Funny, a lot of the names I see in FHB will be down there. Can't wait._____________________________HomeBase__________________________ LLC
and now we've gone and displayed how a thread can be hijaked for the betterLOL

The big outfits like Pulte, Centex, Lennar, maybe Toll Brothers, etc., with their large numbers of managers, are treasure troves for the headhunters that specialize in that kind of personnel.
Shows like the NAHB, now called the International Builders Show, are great places for networking.
And these shows always have fancy display booths set up by the software guys.
So, if a lead or PM wanted to expand his horizons, that could be a good starting place? still thinking about Naples?

Absolutely, re the employment search. This year's show is in Orlando, and is the biggest yet.
Everyone wears a tag giving name and company affiliation, which makes it easy to buttonhole people.
There can be a cost problem, in that show admission, for the professional part, can run many hundreds per head. On the last day of every show I attended, they permit the public in at reduced rates, and most of the pros head out. We always called it the "mom and pop" session. No good networking opportunities then.
And yes, re Naples. I'll know more when I get back from Puerto Vallarta, whenever that happens.
