My 1955 California ranch style home has exposed rafters and is stuccoed all the way up to the roof sheathing between the rafters. I want to pierce the exterior walls up between the rafters to provide for intake air for use with ridge venting.
The stucco is 1 to 1 1/2 thick at this point and is backed by petrified 2×4 blocking between each rafter. I have drilled a few test holes with a 2″ carbide encrusted hole saw for the stucco layer. I then followed with a 2″ forestner bit for the 2×4 block. It’s VERY slow going with very little space to handle the drill motor up under roof overhang. I plan to insert mini-louver (2 per 24″ bay) circular vent covers.
Has any body had to deal with creating eave vent area this way? What worked for you? Perhaps I should drill more but smaller (1″ to 1 1/2″ dia) vent holes. All comments will be appreciated. Bill Handy
