I am currently adding a living rm additon to my home. We will be installing a masonary fireplace. The foundation I designed is 36″ in depth 58″ in length and 48″ wide with 20′ in height.Construction materials will be 16″ flue tile, concrete block, firebrick with a cover of 6″x8″ Texas Limestone.I plan to install three 1/2″ rebar mats on 4″ centers every 10″ of depth. The mats will be tied 3′ into the surrounding 5″ slab on grade. The soil conditons consist of sandy loam clay, meduim corase with small iron ore at 36″ to 54″ well drained. Have I designed in overkill on the fireplace foundation?

Wayne, It sounds like your footing won't crack....but keep in mind that all of that strength doesn't mean a thing if it is not sitting on solid ground. If possible , do not disturb the natural ground where it will sit. If it is disturbed, fill in 6" layers and compact as you fill. This is actually the most important part. Choose your backfill carefully if it is sitting on fill. A dense, road gravel like material makes excellent fill under these kinds of things.
