I’m starting to add the siding to my ranch to country-cape conversion and it is starting to take shape. I’ll try to post a before and after photo so that all those that have helped answer questions and share opinions can see the results! I have the exterior trimmed in Azek and I’m siding with Hardiplank. We decided to go with the pre-finished Hardiplank, since winter will be here (northern NJ) soon enough and I’m going to be pushing it to get the outside completely finished.
My question is about the proportions for the inside corners. I have used the pre-fabricated Azek outside corners in 5/4 X 4 and they look very nice with the siding and the proportions look right. I was planning to make-up the inside corners from the 5/4 X 4 Azek stock that I purchased. I’m trying to figure out the best way to do this and also decide what the proportion (size) should be. I’ve ripped some of the outside corner cut-offs to about 1 inch on each side of the inside corner but it still doesn’t look right. Am I missing something? Should I just create a 1″ square corner piece that the siding can butt up to? Something about making the inside corners from a “reversed” outside corner even with the sides cut down still doesn’t look right. I haven’t hung any siding next to it yet, so I’m hoping some of the “experts” here at BT can help!

Could you post a photo of your test bits so we could get a better idea of what you're up against? Figuring proportions 'blind' is a bit risky, actually, since it's completely dependent on the visual result....

I'll try to post a couple pictures tonight. I know that some people do not use a trim piece on the inside corners and just butt the adjacent siding together, but I think a small trim piece would add a little detail and provide a nice vertical joint that can be caulked to prevent moisture from getting past. I'm just trying to determine what that trim piece would or should look like for an inside corner.
I'll attach a sketch that might help explain it better!
Been a while since I have done any siding, but, it seems to me, that we used to just go with a 1x1 or 1.5x1.5 in the inside corner. Think that would look just fine.
Sorry, I don't have the program to open that sketch you posted.Dinosaur

Thanks piffin,
I was thinking the same thing and I think I'll rip the 5/4 Azek stock (which is actually 7/8") to 7/8 X 7/8 square and see what that looks like. I know it'll be a pain to paint this in the future, but I have been painting everything in advance with B. Moore's best acrylic latex, so I'm hoping that I won't have to worry about painting any trim for about 10-15 years. Everyone seem's to think the Azek will hold up with good quality latex for a long long time, so we'll see!

I'm not sure I understand your comment. Did you attach a separate 5/4 X 5/4 piece to oneside of the inside corner and a 5/4 X 2 piece to the other side? In this case each side of the inside corner had a 5/4 reveal? I might try that as well to see which I like better.
The other thought that I had was in keeping the inside corner as small as possible might allow me to get a siding nail near the edge of the siding that actually connects to a stud through the sheathing. A larger inside corner makes this nearly impossible unless I add blocking on the inside.
Thanks for the comments. I'll try it out and let you know what it looks like. I'll try to post a picture if I get far enough over the next couple days!

I would rip the 5/4 stock into squares and use that. 3/4" is too small, IMO. If you want to paint the IS corners, do so prior to installing them, although next time the house is painted, they will probably be painted the same color as the field, unless you specifically request they be cut in.
ditto........5/4 squareEvery once in a while, something goes right!
I worked on a house with the same detail and we made the inside corner board stand 1/4" proud of the outermost point of the siding. Good proportion and easy to work with.
Just got finished with this on my house and I made inside corners from 5/4 stock. Ripped one down by 5/4 and just nailed each one to the wall. Looks great. I'll see if I can post a pic tomorrow.

Wed keep those inside corner pieces aas small as possible. If the lapped edge of the siding stnads proud of the sheathing by 3/4", then the inside corner should be ripped to 7/8" or maybe one inch is all, that way it pretty well disappears.
But, of course, I never have a photo close up of the right detail at the right time.
