Hey Frenchy…. whaddya know about these
Frenchy, any information on the Terex TX 7745….. rotating reach telehandlers? They’ve got a 45′ boom and rotate like an excavator. I’m wondering if you’ve got the drop on them? Don’t see to many of them…. I’m guessing they’re either really expensive or a really bad idea.
Here’s a link:

I can't speak for Frenchy, but, aside from the boom configuration, they're similar to telescoping boom hydraulic cranes with outriggers.
I've seen a couple on some large commercial jobs hoisting steel and some large A/C units.
I imagine they have a bit more lift capacity, but, if they're like cranes I've run they're usually used in a stationary position with the outriggers out and down.
Probably a little heavier on the pocketbook, too.
I could use one right now for some log work I'm doing....maybe I can set up a free demonstration...call a few friends over to watch.
I'm thinking of it as a potential replacement for my telehandler. I like the idea of being able to swing a load around without moving the machine. But I'm wondering how stable it is to drive around and jack a load... sans outriggers... as you would with a 'regular' RTFL.View Image
If it's what I described, and I've only operated a couple, Link Belt and Bantam, you can move stuff sans outriggers if you go slow and the terrain is pretty even. The ones I'm familiar with had a "crab" capability but not the frame tilt and they're a bit top heavy so if you get on some unstable ground or very much side hill, they can go over. The one pictured in your link appeared to have smaller tires dualed, which may help....dunno.The ones I'm familiar with had taller, wider earthmover type tires which put the center of gravity up a bit.I'm wondering if a telescoping crane can be easily retro-fitted with the fork platform; seem I recall a work platform on a REALLY large hydraulic crane lifting material into a high rise project. It was on one of those extreme machine shows IIRC and the crane was sporting a boom in the neighborhood of 120 feet. There's new innovations all the time and I've been away from the heavy construction/industrial type work for a few years now.A friend of mine who is a commercial diver who sometimes salvages fishing boats that run aground or anchors from ships that fall into the bay, recently bought a fairly large Bantam brand crane at auction for less than $20K. It had a bent outrigger cylinder and needed a new radiator, but is otherwise good to go. He's done a couple marine salvages in the last year which mostly paid for it.They do require a lowboy to move, or permits if you go on the road.I could sure use one from time to time....I am an Animal
Good info Notch... thank you. If it's as tipsy as the one you're talking about, then it's a total deal breaker. That was my biggest fear. Trailering isn't an issue... we use a lowboy and 10 wheeler to move my current machine anyway.
Your buddy's job (the diver) sounds very cool. I'm sure it's 'another day at the office' for him, but it sure sounds exciting to me. I'm way too much of a chicken though. I can't help but think about sharks when I'm in a swimming pool! I think I saw Jaws at too young an age though. ;)View Image
He's a great big dude...the water level on the Pacific shores comes up a bit when he goes in....6' 8" @ 320#'s and little body fat....we refer to him as "The Human Dragline".His DW is 5'-0"....They were sport diving somewhere in the Caribbean a few years ago, exploring some coral formations...she thought she was sticking her head in a small cave...he got a photo....of her head inside the mouth of a large Grouper. Fortunately Groupers don't eat people.I am an Animal
dieselpig,
If you want the most stable telehandler made buy a Ingersol Rand (Now they are sold under the Volvo name) get the low profile foam filled tires and you won't believe how stable that piece is.. It will absolutely amaze you compared to Caterpillar..
They tend to be really durable too! a tiny fraction of the maintinace you get with Cat's
Do yourself a favor as well. Get the cold weathe package the one where they replace the hydraulic fluid with ATF..
the controls are so smooth you can shave with them <grin>
Thanks Frenchy, I figured you'd have the drop. They're sounding more and more like a bad idea. For the past couple years I've sort of had it in my head that I'd buy an IR when it was time to replace my Cat. But I came across one of those used on the web and it got me real curious. When it's time to upgrade.... I think I'll stick with an IR. Thanks again.View Image
Brian: manitou also makes one. they were discussing on JLC yeserday
you sitting down 300k for new
85' boom 10000lbs weight capacity
awful nice but you had better of buying used I would think
some long greeeeen!
Way to rich for my blood!View Image
thats what I thought to.
I think you would have to be framing lots of apartments to justify the cost.
dieselpig,
Most of those are made in italy.. KD Manitou introduced the first ones and had a nightmare with them.. Glad when they got past the warrantee.
Lull also produced a version that swiveled only 15 degreees for the Korean market (none came back to this market to my knowledge)
The main weaknees seems to be either the swing bearing not capable of dealing with the loads or leaks in the hydraulic systems.. although Terex has long had a history of ordering the cheapest possible componants in order to make the equipment price attractive in order to gain market share.
Terex isn't a company that's very good at getting parts to customers efficently. Long delays seem the norm and since that piece is imorted I can imagine it' a real problem.
I first saw examples at the world of concrete show in Vegas and hiding my badge I jumped up for a quick turn at the controls..
First thing I noticed is their lack of stability unless the outriggers were down and then I noted how little capacity they really had in forward reach.
Extrapolating my experiance with rough terrain cranes You really lose a lot of capacity and it get's downright scary traveling over uneven terrain..
One final point.. Terex is a company that seems to be constantly selling off and buying new divisions. I wouldn't be surprise if they aren't quietly looking for someone to purchase them..
