Got a shake shingle roof with about 15/20% curled shingles when dry…. less than 5% when they are wet/damp… edge curl, not tab lift…
the HO wants it repaired/flattened…
I figured to replace the curled shingles but since shakes were outlawed a few years back getting replacements are a tuff call around here…
this roof receives zero shade… and there are no leaks… cold roof type installation.. 5/12… 24″ shake with 5/7″ irregular exposure… nominal 3/4 thick at the tab…
so… what do you suggest???
it’s rained about everyday since what seems the beginning of time there…

imerc... so these are shakes with a sawn back ?
1st problem is getting a source... can you find these shakes .... special order ?
my inclination would be to replace sections all the way to the ridge
on the theory of .. "if you touch it , you own it "
not sawn on the back....
the owning deal crossed my mind....
finding a source isn't as easy as i originally thought...
replacing to the ridge... might as well tear off and reroof the whole deal...

so , real shakes...
typical install is course.... then 18" strip of roofing felt...
then course.... 18" strip of roofing felt
so the felt is part of the waterproof... and it's almost impossible to thief a shake out... then slide a new shake in without bunching up the felt and destroying the waterproof....
if it were a minor replacement maybe... perhaps he'd like you to belt sand the curl ?
maybe paul or seeyou or walter or someone has a better idea
Mike Hussein Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
that's the detail... the strapping is 2x4's...
sanding or planing is out...
thought of face nailing the curls with SS ring shanks since the shingles are soaked and somewhat pliable...
other than the curls.. the roof is in good very shape...
BTW... they're 24's and not 18's...
attempted a theifing.. they're nailed with at least #10HD galvs...

I dunno, sounds like the installer ( notice I didn't say roofer) didn't cull the flatsawn ones that show up in a bundle. That and didn't split the holy mother wide ones or set em aside for hips valleys or ridges.
Last Shake job I did was 24" at 7.5 and I had ridge caps to premake ( woven) and all wides got set aside to be ripped, or a hatchett whack to keep em reasonable, but I doubt I had many over 8" wide any way, and under 8" when properly split ( Vert. Grain) they don't misbehave.
Last month I did a 14 sq. cedar shingle roof and had a LOT of sapwood and deadwood ( too brittle, real dark brown) and few flatsawns..they got culled. Roof came out great.
I wonder why if its so sopping wet, and the shakes are pliable, they didn't face swell and cup the other way if the backs are still dry? And for a 3/4" butt to cup / curl they HAVE to be flatsawn..I'd chase the installer, supplier.

Marty, sneak a hack saw blade up under to cut the nails.then flip over the curled shake and re-insert.or tell the guy that if he wants flat roofing you will price out a rubber membrane...or concrete (brownbagg could do it).

"tell the guy that if he wants flat roofing you will price out a....."Yeah, Shakes are supposed to look rough!I suspect the installer did not "read the grain" which he hailed them. the 10d nails suggest inexperienced overkillers doing the work, but it ain't leaking, so I ain't touching it. Can't afford to own it.

"Can't afford to own it."One of the main reasons I no longer do roof jobs,no telling what the previous hacks did to cause a problem.so I tell people my insurance doesn't cover me for roofing..

face nailing with ring shanks for that many shingles would have a leak caused within 2-3 years more or less depending on the climate

at 28 years old, it is starting to have some surface erosion. That is why it is acting up. nearly time for a new roof anyways. He can do it now or wait until a few fall off and it is actually leaking in another few years. I definitely wouldn't try 'fixing' it now though. That's like giving a sixty year old woman a boob job

Do they permit fire treated shakes? This is a strange scenario, since I know there are land covenants in COLO subdivisions and delelopements that require shakes only, but since those were written into the deeds, the state had thiose wildfires and drought that precipitated a lot of 'no wood roof' rules in the codes.
So a lot of people will be facing this dilema as their existing roofs come due for replacement.

Where are you nowdays?
how old is this roof?
Do you know if these were laid like shingles or if the have felt interwoven like shakes should have?
The symptoms suggest that it was laid without interwoven felt over a tight felt base of maybe even total I&W.
My thought is that the problem is cosmetic only since it is not leaking and it is a " not broken, don't fix it" situation where trying to replace 20% of the shakes would be likely to cause more problems than it fixes while costing a lot of money - so much that it it is really that ugly to the HO, bid a brand new roof replacement done right.
