Hello folks,
Somewhere around 1995, I replaced my old hinge mortising outfit with one from an ad in FHB magazine. I ordered it by telephone from a man who happened to be the inventor of this particular tool, and I believe he was in California. I hung a few hundred with it over the years, but now it’s missing. Not sure if it was stolen or what, but I really liked it and need to replace it. Problem is, I can’t remember the brand. It wasn’t a big name like Porter or Bosch. The template had mahogany inserts, aluminum rails and so on and came in a black plastic case. Anybody out there familar with a template like this, or have any idea of how to find the maker, if still in business. My memory is getting scary…
Thanks for any help.

Wasn't Carey Template, was it?
No, Ron, that doesn't ring a bell. But thanks for the effort. It's bad when the memory is going. Things that I'm so familiar with sometimes draw a blank now. Years ago sometimes I'd go to the truck and forget what tool I was after...look around a bit...see the tool and remember and go back to work. Now sometimes I go through the same routine, except when I finally decide what tool I was after, I can't remember what I wanted it for. Don't know what I'd do without the pocket notebook and pen that stays in my shirt pocket; my portable memory.10man (I think??)
Pat Warner makes a lot of router accessories, and he always makes them out of the materials you're mentioning, aluminum and tropical wood. I can't remember if he's in California or not. His website is http://www.patwarner.com, I think.

Sounds like one I read about in Gary Katz's book.
Spaulding Industries Versatemp. Mahogany and aluminum?
I tried googling it with no reponse.
Good luck
Thanks everybody...I just found it. Spent hours ransacking the shop and finally located it behind a sea of tool boxes underneath my painting equipment rack. It is a VersaTemp by Spaulding, just like you guessed vanderpooch. It is the best template I've ever used. Ya'll have any favorites? What are the pros and cons of the ones you use? Thanks again.10man
Well let us know how to get one.Are they on the Net?
Sorry Tashler, the company must be out of business. I googled versatemp, spaulding industries and even the company phone number and got zippo. They might be manufactured under another name now, who knows. I can't begin to keep up with the changes in tool companies the way they swap around. Maybe someone else know of a hinge template that's a combonation of mahogony with aluminum rails made under another name.10man
