I am building my new home and decided to put in a home network. There is one thing I am unsure about though.I ran my cat5e for both my phone and data.My question is how do i hook up my cat5e line to a phone jack?It is larger than a normal phone jack and has more wires.Do i need a different jack?Do I just connect a certain number of wires to the jack(if so which ones?)?Or do I need updated phones altogether?Thank you for any help ahead of time!!

Sounds like you might have the wrong jack for the phone lines. Telephone uses a jack that accepts an RJ-11 plug, that's the standard phone size you're used to seeing. It uses either two or four wires, depending on whether you're hooking up for a single line or two line phone system. Data uses an RJ-45 jack that's larger and hooks to all eight wires in the cat 5 cable. For your voice line, just use four of the eight in the cat 5 and stub the others back. Of the four contacts in a phone jack, usually the two middle ones are the red and green wires and energize line 1. The two outer contacts are the yellow and black wires and hook to line 2.
