How far does a structure have to be from a Septic Tank? Does is matter if the portion of the structure isn’t living space? I’m looking to extend a garage, but I’ll be getting closer to the septic tank. It’s an attached garage.

Check with the county health dept.
*five feet
*Think it's 10' in Utah. But it is going to be whatever your local building dept sez, and don't you forget it! Joe H
*Local and state health department set min/max distances in KY. call'm. Dave
*Here in Maine it's been ten feet for a while but I think they just increased it to 12 or 15. But that's for a basement foundation. I think it's closer for a slab. Fact that it's a garage shouldn't make a difference 'cause next owner'll convert to living space. It's local codes you need to know - they're the one that'll fine you.
*As mentioned above, you local regulations may vary. The following is for Nebraska:http://ianrwww.unl.edu/pubs/wastemgt/g448.htm#stland some less specific information for Georgia:http://ianrwww.unl.edu/pubs/wastemgt/g448.htm#stl
*Had to scrap a building plan last fall because of septic problems, be careful about all the county regs before you get in too far. Also know where your neighbour's tanks are if you think abnout relocating your own.We were euchered because the neighbours tanks on all sides would have been too close to our lot for our tank to be moved anywhere.
*I seemed to have a mild case of URL retention when I entered the second link above. The real link to the Georgia information is at:http://www.ces.uga.edu/pubcd/c819-2w.htmlThere is also a very extensive list of septic related links and other references at:http://www.inspect-ny.com/septbook.htm
