We’re considering purchasing a Viking 30″ range and a Kobe range hood. The Viking company says that the range should be 24-27″ above the range. I’ve also heard up to 30″ is okay. Does anyone know what’s safe and how to determine that?

((((The Viking company says that the range should be 24-27")))
that's a good place to start
*Thanks, Mike, but Viking's direction refers to Viking's hood, which is slightly different in size, and substantially different in ventilation (cfm), from the Kobe. And since Kobe doesn't say, I was wondering if there's a more general rule or guideline.
*30 inches will put the rim at apx. 5.5 feet.. right at the average man's eye level..as you go higher.. you get more visibility into the pots cooking on the back burner... but the hood loses some of it's effectiveness as it gets higher...also.. as the hood gets higher , the cabinets above become less useful...so the hood location becomes an exercise in design....the standard hoods were usually at 30" but they were for standard stoves... you ain't got one.....
*Robert,You're asking a question that defies answering without you providing more info:*What is the rated NG or derated LPG BTU output of the cooktop? It is a gas cooktop, right?*What is the real CFM of the hood?*Does the hood extend over the footprint of the cooktop? By how much?*How many open sides around the cooktop? Is it against a wall (3 sides open), on an island (4 sides open), etc.Call Kobe. I'd hate to see you do the installation only to find the hood inadequate. Install it as Kobe dictates so you can fall back on them if you run into problems down the road.Regards, Mongo
*question: I just bought a house. The previous owners had remodelled their kitchen two years ago. They have a gas cooking range with a microwave on top; the range has ductless venting. We do a lot of wok-style cooking and really want external venting in the kitchen. Is there any way we can accomplish that without replacing the current stove/microwave option? I hear there are new venting hoods that can go under a microwave, like the GE sliding hood? any ideas?
*you can replace the microwave with a combo microwave/vent unit. all the major appliance mfrs make them now, for around $250. They can be set up to exhaust into an outside duct out the top, back, or recirculate back into the room through a filter, though I wouldn't recommend it.I have installed many of these and have found them to have good drawing power and still allow a good sized microwave in a convenient location.Hope this helps. Rich.
