How long do you have to build a house?
I’m trying to understand.
Who does the bid? You? Is it a fixed lump sum price?
Who does the hours breakdown? You? Your boss? The GC?
What happens if you blow the hours and overrun, let’s say, by 15 percent?
Looks as if it is something like 24 x 40, or about 1890 square feet, plus a 3-wall attached garage, maybe 21 x 24 feet. Sound about right?
Are you doing finished fascia, drip edge, and roofing felt?
What is considered “punch out” work?

I'm an employee of McBride and Sons homes, I'm a foreman of a crew and the bids are done by the "estimators" at the corporate office. It's a fixed lump sum price and if I go over by 15% I get a really nice one on one meeting with my "riding boss" who screams at me with his veins sticking out of his neck for not making time. If that's the case, there are a lot of cuss words involved, a few threats to my job position and my building practices come into question. 20 to 30 hours over is typical and I don't bat an eyelash if I come that close to the bid time. With a 3 man crew that's only one day extra on the job. All bids are designed to make the company a 20% profit.
I don't do finished fascia, that falls into siders work. I just do the gutter boards at the end of the truss tails. The drip edge and roof felt are part of the roofers job here in my neck of the city, there for are not counted into my time on the job. We are a union company, we can't tread into other trades jobs even though roofers and siders carry a carpenters work card.
I'm sure that just complicates my description of the total hours bid for the job but that's just the way it is here. I know how many hours I have when I start a house and that's why I was asking the question about time to build houses.

I am from St. Louis, I know a bunch of people in southern IL who work for McBride and Sons. Everyone of them are always looking for other work. My "cub" is from MBAS. Look for different employment, You can never be happy there from what I have been hearing. LOcal 634 from Salem IL here.
Nice to meet you brother.I hope Chuck Norris never potato sacks me!!!!
bstcrpntr --- I hope to grow into this name.
I work for Rehkemper - We do a heck of a lot of trusses for McBride, so you may have set some of them.Since they're a tract builder, everything they do is ultra-competitive. No way your company is getting a 20% (net) margin or they wouldn't be working for McBride. Worjing for tract builders is always gonna be the same - Quality means very little. Faster and cheaper is all you're ever gonna hear.
According to a recent survey, men say the first thing they notice about a woman is their eyes. And women say the first thing they notice about men is they're a bunch of liars.
He's not a sub, Boss. He is on McBride's payroll and is a foreman.
