how to install laminate on conc backer board?
As the finishing touch at the top of the shower I want to install a laminate barrier above the tub surround. should I skim coat the ruff durock with thinset or something to have a smoother surface for the contact adhesive. Or seal it with some primer?

Are you talking about plastic laminate? I don't know how the expanion/contraction rates compare with the 2 materials, maybe someone will be along wth that info.
Possibly construction adhesive would work. When I put p-lam on drywall i usually go with yellow pva. The substrate and lam expand and contract at enough different rates that contact cement is no advantage. Point is ceilings and walls can have a different standard over a countertop.
I would use concrete bonder,
I would use concrete bonder, rolled on. Maybe two coats to get it smooth enough.
