in my building experiences, i have not had the opportunity to become familiar with planers, joiners, etc. now i’m finishing out a house i built for myself, and will need the use of these tools.
i have a few thousand board feet of white and red oak, cut from a few trees on site by a wood mizer portable mill. most of this wood is in the form of 1×4 and 5/4×6, and the moisture content is reading around 7 to 8 percent after site drying (yes, i’m not complaining about the drought this past summer).
i looked into having this wood planed down at shops around town. for that price, i can buy the tools and have some left over. so…
1. what features/size should i be looking for.
2. what is/do i need a joiner or shaper?
3. any tips/tricks to make life easier?
i appreciate all responses and also welcome any online resources to research.
