So, I spent a profitable 6 hours Saturday cruising around the archives. All I can say is y’all are great folks. I have been able to get more quality information here than from any other sauce on the web
I still have some questions. Hopefully everyone will have pity and patience for a poor as a church mouse guy who simply cannot afford a contractor. I have a 1915 little 1200 sq ft four square bungalow with deteriorating stucco-like siding over 1by sheathing boards and NO insulation whatsoever. I’m planning to side the house this summer with hardiplank in a board and batten fashion, and figured I might as well insulate when I’m there.
My questions:
1) The overhang is only about 1 ft. I’m concerned with water infiltration with the board and batten siding. Should I go with conventional lap style installation, or should I caulk between the boards and battens?
2) I’d like to blow in dp cells. The problem is that about 400 sq ft of the basement is dirt floor (covered with poly) and the rest is concrete so badly cracked that serious moisture is put into the basement. The heat is forced air and the ducting is in the basement. If I seal the stud bays top and bottom with expanding foam, would this be enough to protect the cells from moisture? Or should I skip the cells in the walls until I after I have the cash to do the basement floor (probably not for 2 years or so)? In that case. I’m considering adding 3/4″ of foamboard under the siding taped at the joints as a substitute for the tyvek. That way I figure that I’d get some insulation and the stud-bay moisture would not be a problem.
Thanks in advance for any input you may have. I really repect what quality contractors have to offer, but I really cant afford to pay anyone else to do this stuff. (End of sucking up)
