I read in a back issue of FHB that you should never combine copper valley flashing and copper gutters with red cedar roofing shingles. The reason was that the cedar would leech compounds that would corrode the copper. Is this true? If so how significant is the corrosion? What type of flashing should be used with red cedar shingles? Thanks.

I've read that too. And I'm puzzled. Just did some work on my roof and the red cedar layer was up there for 25 years before the asphalt layer went over. The copper valleys I uncovered were 100%. Chimney flashings and sidewall step flashings same (though the cedar has always been painted on the sidewalls so one would assume no leaching. Here in Fairfield County all the new monster mansions are going up with red cedar roofs and copper flashings everywhere. Are they really bound to fail? I've got the web address for the cedar shake and shingle bureau somewhere, I'll look for it.
*The cedar shake and shingle bureau http://www.cedarbureau.com has a FAQ : can I use copper valleys and flashings with cedar? The response is:"Copper and CedarWhen using copper with cedar, use a minimum 16 ounce. Fasteners should be copper or bronze. Valley flashing should have a 1-inch standing seam in the center and the edges should be crimped 1/2-inch."
*LarryMy experience echo's the others, copper flashings and red cedar go hand in hand. . . just goes to show you can't believe everything you read, even in FHb, or Breaktime.
*Larry, that bit of news didn't have an Alcoa logo attached did it? I've always seen cedar and copper or cedar and lead on older houses... no significant corrosion noted.
