I am trying to ignore your post for I'm afraid I'll answer and what I'll say you won't like. But the feeling won't go away, know what I mean? I mean, (in my best Jack Nicholson-esque rant) I MEAN, it just won't leave me alone, man. See what you've done? You made me do this, man. I thought I could just leave it alone, but no, you had to keep hammering, hammering, hammering, man. Okay, so you want it? I'm the only one here and boy-oh-boy, yer gonna' get it, man.
So, here I am.
So, just how much did you spend on your granite? You gonna' do it yourself, eh? Never done it before, right? Can't say you can't try, now can I? I mean, boy-oh-boy, you can try to set your wonderful looking stone over a real unsuitable substrate, right? But what do you think you're gonna' have when you're through? You probably won't get through. You'll give up. Yeah, man. You'll give up and then you'll be feeling real bad because you know you shoulda' listened, but no, you didn't. You're gonna' give up and call the real dude. Then he's gonna' charge you twice the money you thought you'd save. You know why?
Because you can't set stone over a sloppy substrate like ceramic tile because you'll be trying so damn hard to make it look like the beautiful picture in your mind that you'll die before you get finished. Man-oh-man. Yeah, you'll be crying--well, I really feel for ya' buddy. Know why? You know why.
How do you propose to get all those stone tiles perfectly flat? Imean, theygotta'beinthesameplane, exactly!ifyouwantittolookreallycool. How you gonna' get that over tile? In stone, 1/16" is TOO MUCH. Oh, I hear ya', you'll surface grind it flat. Boy-oh-boy, talk about taking a second job. Well, buddy, all I can say is lots of luck to ya'.
Oh yeah, you want to glue on a little edge cap? Actually, that's the easiest part. You just bust off the existing ceramic tile trim cap and scoot the new field tile on the countertop to the front of the cap to ride up over the vertical face tiles. You use a flexible thinset to bond those to the freshly exposed--remember, you broke off the ceramic trim cap--mud substrate and fix them in place until they dry with a wood batten or tape, for crying out loud.
I'll tell ya', remove the existing tile and put down a really flat substrate. If you don't know how, get someone to give you a good start. You'll thank me for telling ya'.
*Michael, I think Rich Just about covered it. We will be taking away his caffine now. The only thing he left off was the added weight.Rick TukP.S. Rich, my advice to you is to drink heavily. Rick
*Michael - why wouldn't you want to remove the tile top?Rich, man, touch a nerve, or what?

I haven't seen an idea this bad here since someone wanted to use drywall for subfloor material. Get rid of the tile (man)

Jimbo, you of all people should understand what's up here. Look, it was something like 2am when I posted and really, I was trying to ignore this thread, but I figured, what the heck, no one else had responded so I better before Michael blows it with the granite. Basically, I knew what I was gonna' say, yet I couldn't rid myself of the vehemence I felt over such an ill-fated plan. I tried to couch it in humor and all of a sudden it was Jack talking.
I don't know Michael; it has occurred to me he may be a fine craftsman in his own right, but I have seen too many otherwise good plans fail because of trying to avoid doing the job properly, among other reasons. So yeah, I guess that is the sore spot. I mean, what do I say when I walk into a man's home and he proudly shows me the botched job he did himself? Gee, that could start a whole new thread.
*No, I know exactly where you were coming from. It's just that you are usually the most patient, careful responder, especially with strangers. I had to check a couple times to make sure it said "Rich". I think it's great. You know how you get images of someone over time here. Later - jb
