I am planning to install a knotty pine cathedral ceiling in my home. The present ceiling is drywall on 16″ center ceiling joists. The pine is all 5/8″ thick and 4, 6 or 8″ wide, tongue and groove. I intend to fasten it by nailing through the tongue with 2 1/2″ 15ga finish nails and construction adhesive. Will this be sufficient? Do I need to face nail also? Do I need to tongue and groove the ends? Any suggestions on clear finish?

I would think that would be ok. You would not have to t&g the ends ,use your plate jointer ,, Good Excuse to go get a new tool cause the boards will look better if you put in the biscuts.....and its fun to use a new tool.
*It would be unusual if you didn't get several responses to your questions. One such response would be to search past posts because there was, quite recently, a discussion of this subject.I think nails only, at an angle through the tongue (and catching some of the meat of the board, too) at 16" OC would be sufficient to anchor the T&G (no adhesive) along with square cut ends butted tightly. Do not attempt to make the ends land on a nailing surface, just let them end where ever - less waste - the T&G holds everything together. Random staggering of the cut ends looks better, IMHO, also, try not to have real short lengths. Your last board will probably have to be ripped to fit and some careful measuring of your overall project will keep it from being a miserly 1" strip, or worse, a strip that starts at an inch but scarfs out to 2 or 3. This piece and possibly the lower edge of your first course should be the only place you would face nail. I have over 760 SF of cedar T&G on my own ceilings that still looks good after 13 years. Have a picture, somewhere.Happy Nailings.Ralph
*On a similar subject, I was wondering how to prevent the expansion and contraction spaces that have appeared on my painted beaded tongue and groove wainscoting, when I do a barrel vault beaded ceiling for my kitchen. I'm thinking of using reclaimed pine or cypress for the ceiling, so won't be painting it. Would applying a bee's wax or oil finish help to prevent such movement?
*Even with back sealing, you're going to have movement. Whatever finish you use, do it b/4 installation and get the tongues. When it shrinks, you at least won't have the unfinished lines showing up. Best of luck.C&D, you two are sure sweating the details. Would love to find a customer like you.
