I’m trying to install copper flashing under vinyl siding to flash a newly installed deck ledger. I can’t get the copper more than 1″ up under the siding. I think I must be running into nails holding the vinyl channel horizontally to the house??
What do I do here? Probably remove the first course of siding with one of those siding removal tools. How far up should the flashing go under the siding anyway?
Thanks,
Dave

I like to go up 8" and fold over 2". The vinly siding is pretty easy to unsnap and resnap without the tool. But I have that zipper tool and it makes it a lot easier. I think you need to remove one course of siding and the J chanel where you can get to the nails that are holding you up on the flashing. If there is siding or living space below this deck I would maybe flash it 3" out. But still go up the wall at least 6".
You can't get the flashing any higher without unsnapping the vinyl. There is a starter strip at the bottom of the first course, and the bottom edge of the course hooks around that. To get any higher you need to unzip the vinyl, remove the starter strip, install flashing, reinstall starter strip, then snap the siding back down.
Thanks guys, appreciate the help...

If he removes starter strip and needs to go up on siding he will need to buy some j channel and cut down siding. I thought he had a ledger alreadey in place with siding already knotched and j channeled.
If the ledger is already in place, there presumably is a starter strip above it, or J channel. He needs to remove that to install flashing any higher than an inch or so.Whether it's starter or channel depends on where the ledger falls relative to the profile of the siding. Ideally it would be a starter strip, but I suppose not everyone plans that well or is that lucky. From his description, it sounded like he was probably dealing with starter strip. If the ledger isn't in place, and there is no pre-existing cutout for the ledger, then the siding will need to be cut away for it, and starter or J channel installed.I'm guessing, based on the description, that we have a pre-existing cutout for the ledger, as is common on many tract homes around here.
