The job is to install 4″X8″ granite tiles on a wall in a 36″X64″ rectangle. At first I was going to remove sheetrock and build a 36″X64″ rectangle wood frame with 2X4’s 12″ O.C. to stiffen up the wall area. Then screw 1/2″ cement board to the frame. Well, I changed my mind, because the studs are metal. I don’t like working with metal studs. It’s a 10′ wall with metal studs 16″ O.C. and 1/2″ sheetrock. Now I’m thinking of just laying the granite on top of the sheetrock. The wall is not in a wet area. I use TEC thinset. I’m worried about vibrations. The wall is about 15′ long with a glass double door in the middle. The plan is to install a rectangle of tiles on each side of the glass door. What do you people think. Anybody do anything like this before. All comments welcome.

Cement board sounds logical...
Removing the sheetrock & Adding the durarock is the way I would go. Not sure why working with metal studs is a problem? If it's the flexing of the metal stud while you try to screw into the metal, I suggest ripping a 2 x 4 and filling the web of the metal studs to make it sturdier & less flexible, where the durarock is going. The durarock is going to give you the proper format to attach the granite. As long as the durarock is solidly attached, no flexing is going to knock off the tiles. 2 x 4 doesn't have to be pretty.
