Did it come with installation istructions? Most do.
New construction cans: Nail or screw the joinst hanger tabs into the joist. Doesn't matter which direction -- whichever makes it easier to wire.
Old construction cans: However they'll fit. The ceiling material ends up supporting most or all of the weight (which ain't much).
