Hi all,
I’m installing 1 x 4 tongue and groove cedar siding and I looking for the best method to nail the siding in place. One thought is to shoot a 6d finishing nail into the groove, once the siding is up snap a vertical line on the face of the T&G and shoot additional 8d nails on the exterior, keeping the nail pattern dead straight. FYI: I’m planning on staining the siding once it’s complete. If you have any suggestions, I’m all ears.
Thanks,
Jay

My old trim partner and I did about a bazillion and a half feet of this stuff. It was all fastened with on galvanized 15 ga. Senco nail at a 45 degree doen angle, shot into the corner of the tongue at each stud. Material was all pre-finished all sides to prevent (well, retard anyway) cupping. In the end, sun and weather caused cupping anyway. The gun nail heads aren't enough to keep the material from pulling loose over them. On top of that, if the material isn't bone dry, it'll open up at the joints, showing the surface of the tongue, in about 2 weeks.
Want it to lay flat? Hot-dipped galvanized ring shank nails, two on the face per stud, hand-driven flush. I'd be happy to learn another way, if someone knows it, of keeping them flat.

Jay, int or ext? Prestain at least the tongue for when it invariably shrinks.
I've never had the problem Bruce had, haven't done a bizillion ft either. We've had good luck with T&G RW, oak, fir, 1x6 oak, 1x8 pine, all interior. Prefinished when possible. Biggest threat on the interior was expansion and buckling. If you're talking ext. I would allow for that and maybe follow Bruce's cautions esp sealing all sides and cuts. Best of luck.
