I’m remodeling a sunroom on a concrete foundation into an old-fashioned porch for a client. Has anyone put a wood floor over concrete? What’s the best method?

Hi Katie,
Just make sure you isolate the wood from the concrete, even if you use pressure treated.

*Katie; If the oldfashioned porch will be exposed to the elements, you will need to deal with them. How will water drain? Does the concrete have a slope that will shed water? You have two choices: let the water thru the wood, and allow it to drain out from underneath. Or, have the wood surface repell the water and drain off.Give us some more information. What kind of wood are you putting down? Finishes? Adam
*Blast the wood on with a ram-set or glue it down with adheasive but do make sure that the concrete has a slope and the water has a way to get out.

Have a wood floor(2"x4"'s w/plywood nailed over that which is the entire floor in one half of our house. Concrete is just a slab on grade.Floor has been stable and supported the raising of a family and been in existence now for close to 50 years, so we know it's not pressure treated lumber, right?
Checked it out when I bought house 10 yrs ago, and put new carpet down. Just make sure water gets away and doesn't pool somewhere.
*Thanks for all your feedback. Yes, the concrete does slope away from the house, and we'll be installing either painted hard yellow pine or cedar t&g flooring or pau/ipe flooring parallel to the slope of the concrete. My concern is how to provide ventilation for the flooring and still get the water draining. Should I install two sets of pt stringers in a grid, with the bottom set parallel to the flooring? Gabe, how do you recommend I isolate the pt from the concrete? Thanks again for all your help.

Hi Katie,
There are many products that will do this. The cheapest is felt paper or you can use sill gasket. It's just that you don't want the wood to touch the concrete directly.
