I have a buddy wanting me to help him hang some new wood windows. The opening is all framed out and ready to set them in. Any good tips before we start on this as far as shimming, racking or anything you can think of. Thanks in advance

The words are in Swedish, but the pictures are clear enough to be useful.

Speaking of windows, what is happening with your "problem"?
Bill --
They gave me a 10% rebate, most of which I spent on brass hinges to replace the crappy ones that came on these windows. Instead of putty, they used caulking and wooden stop strips, I'm scraping the excess glop off -- probably about 5 gallons of it. Then I'll disassemble the weatherstripping and hinges, mask, prime, and paint. I'll be starting this soon, since I finally got the concrete work done.

Thanks John, Pictures are worth a thousand words.
Be sure the sill frame they set on is level and all else will be easy.
Vycor is a good idea for waterproffing, especially on the sill.
> Vycor is a good idea
I did a google search for vycor, and all that came up was a corning glass product that's used in chemical labs. Do you have a reference for another product under that name?
Thanks --

Maybe I'm using wrong name. Vycodone? no that's not it!
It's just a thin version of bituthene (ice and water shield) that comes in 6", 9", and 12" rolls.
ask your local lumberyard if they stock it - could be they have a diff name there.

Go to http://www.na.graceconstruction.com/ and search for vycor.
Thanks -- that's the right stuff.

Path,
just a few tips that may help
1. set height of window using a dimension from the floor .... will set all windows
@ the same height....
2. check diag of frame
3 make sure both sashes sill evenly to the frame ... if the unit is racked you should
notice this
4. caulk behind ext window trim..... easiest done after you have set the unit with
leaving a space to run the caulk gun
shim only areas that allow free operation
if you care to be real safe apply a pan @ the sill... stock Jambsill may work..
depends on the type of window
wood windows tend to fail with water wicking into end grain make sure all are
very sealed.......good luck
