I own a 1920s duplex in Milwaukee, Wis. On the backside of the lower unit, a room approximately 10 x 8 sits above a crawl space (the rest of the house is a full basement) with a deck above for the upper unit. The problem is that during our long, cold winters, this room gets very cold. While some of the problem is definitely traceable to old, drafty windows and the doubtful existence of insulation in the walls, the crawl space below also gets very cold and feels drafty.
A previous owner installed (poorly) R-11 3 1/2″ batts between the floor joists. Before adding a vapor barrier in the crawl space, does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can tighten up the space? I’ve already checked for foundation cracks or other gaps which might be letting in air, and filled the two utility holes with expando-foam.
Thanks
Andy Lester
