These pics are from a structure on Block Island. I know there are a lot of reasons not to do this but I’m curious if any of the experienced folks here have seen this done anywhere else. What I don’t have a picture of is where the gutters empty to and now that I think of it, I can’t recall. It definitely lends for some clean lines. I suspect those would need to be schedule 40 and glued to run them inside like that.

I hope the internal chase they run through is well insulated (for sound and for heat loss in the winter)
Could have been done a bit nicer, too (in my opinion)
well at least they call me mr
i saw that done on a bunch of old farmhouses when i was up north ,the ones i saw used the water to drain into a cistern in the basement
my parents house used to be like that, it was originally built in the 1840s
Yup..we reline box gutters, and many fed a cistern in the attic before public water was available. The attic tank gave some gravity feed to flush and provide pressure w/o a pump.
My first ( and hardest) box gutter was like that, and changing the flow to go to downspout drops, was quite a nightmare carpentry wise...barely enough depth in the sub-cornice to get the 1/8'' per foot of fall we aim for.
Around here in KY I see box gutters daily that are in need of repair..guess it is job security.

thanks all for the insight. I guess this is not all that unusual. I plan on putting a cistern in to water the grass but I'll drop it in where the gutter empties to daylight. I guess these houses have been standing for a lot of years but I'd be spooked with a lot of water sitting up in my attic!
