I would like some formulas for an irregular hip/val roof, I’m tired of doing it the “dumb” framer way. I am getting ready to do 7/14 split, basically all jacksl. I would like to know how to figure:
1) angle (rise/run) of plumb cut on irreg hip/val
2) degrees of bevel on cheek cut of irregular jacks
3) common length difference of the irreg jacks (house will have both 16/24 oc)
I have Marshall Gross’ Roof Framing book but right now he is not helping me find the answers. Since my understanding of Sin Cos Tan is limited, it makes it a little harder since he uses them exclusively – I can use them though. Thanks for the help gang!

get the Construction Master 5 or Pro(the Pro also figures some arch stuff) It takes a little to read the book but it wil tell you exactly how long the hip should be, howlong each jack is on each side, what the angle of the cheek cuts, seat cuts, it's amazing. Don't let the book overwelm you, focus on the part you need right now and slowly work your way through the rest. Great tool, but I didn't even realize some of it's potential for a long time until I finally buckled down and learned all it could do. It really is awesome.
1) 8 7/8" to 17" using the framing square
2)63 degrees on the 7 side and 27 degrees on the 14 side
3) 7/12 side at 16"o.c. is 37" at 24" o.c. 55 5/8"
14/12 side at 16" o.c. is 12 1/4" at 24" o.c. 18 1/2"
I just pulled these off the tables in the 2nd edition of " The Roof Framers Bible" the 1st edition had the universal formulas for these but I guess he omitted them on the 2nd for 2 reasons .
1) Its a lot easier to just pull them off the table
2) He wanted to sell more books.
Either way if you cut off pitch roofs this book is worth its weight in gold.
Benny,
Are you saying on the first addition of The Roof Framers Bible he gives all the formulas for "Everything"?
Do you still have the first book?
I would love to see that book. What's the name of the first addition?
Joe Carola
yes he did, it is the same title but published in 1994
I gave it to a young fella who was constantly pestering me asking questions.
You know the type huhn! Anyway I gave it to him a couple of years ago I can try to look him up and copy the page for you if you would like.
Would never have parted with it had I known then that those formulas were ommited. He did add some useful other info in its place though.
Benny,
That young fella who kept pestering you sounds like me ;-)
If you do find him tell him to cough up the goods or I'm coming after him ;-)
Seriously, It would be nice to see that page. I would like to compare notes.
Do you remember if that book covered just about everything the second one covers?
