I’m installing my door and window package from Sierra Pacific. Although expensive, we liked the quality of the wood and aluminum clad windows and decided to buy some longevity. Yesterday I put the first double door in. As I got up the ladder I could see that instead of wrapping the aluminum clad up and over the fir on the top, the aluminum was just cut off, almost hacked off, leaving a sharp, fresh edge for water to run down between the clad and wood. I can hear the company rep saying that it’s not an area to worry about and a little caulk will fix me up. But in the Northwest there is horizontal rain and I’m worried. And why should I use the last line of defense, caulk, to cure a manufacturing ill? Is this even close to “standard” exterior door construction?
