Looking for aluminum “H-section” joiners for Hardie lap siding butt joints? Joiners for fiber-board lap siding don’t fit the thinner Hardie material.
We installed Hardie 12″ lap siding using a Max siding nailer on a 2×4 framed, OSB sheated house. Nails are concealed, in the studs, exactly 1/8″ butt joint gap, sealed with polyurethane caulk. Some of the joints have now opened to as much as 1/4″ and the caulking torn away, leaving a swell hole for water. grrrrrr!!
Thanks,
Bill

Yeah, we did our house in Masonite a dozen years ago and used the joiners. I know they look a hair "impure" vs a caulked joint, but I actually like the look, and they are essentially trouble-free. Not sure how you'd install them after the fact, though.
happy?
Thats strange to hear.
Ive done three houses with it and I visited one I built and installed Hardie. I was supposed to meet the renter and she was late so I walked around the house looking . It needs painted but no cracks visable . I was thinking what an improvement over masonite that did extract caulk in the joint. Nothing in the corners either and you know thats the #1 place for it.
I think I would try the Hardie warranty.

never seen hardie move at all but i still felt strip behind all joints as i go... takes 20 min to cut enough 3" x 12" 15lb felt strips to do a whole house... and only a second more to install as you go... not a required item but makes you feel better to do it....

Hardie rep highly advised me to place felt strips at the joints - I did so and works well.
